Follow the Merbok River towards the sea and there you will find a seafood lover’s heaven awaiting. At the mouth of the river is Tanjung Dawai, a well-known fishing village that enjoys the spoils of the sea and the nutrient-rich environment of the mangrove forests. Here it is simply impossible to get fresher seafood as you can have your meal straight from the sea, freshly caught by local fisherman and cooked with local herbs and spices at a restaurant near the jetty. The abundance of seafood also enables the production of popular Malaysian delicacies and conserves such as fish or shrimp crackers (keropok), dried anchovies (ikan bilis), dried cuttlefish and shrimp paste or belacan (widely used in Malaysian cuisine). Moreover, visitors may also take a 10-minute boat ride from the jetty to the Pantai Merdeka (Merdeka beach) located just the opposite side of the jetty.
